The Richmond News is reporting that the “Steveston’s favourite summer catch could be pricey after DFO shuts down all salmon fishing in the Lower Fraser River.

Still, the situation is so dire that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) called a halt late last week to all salmon fishing on the Lower Fraser amid predictions of the worst-ever sockeye return on record.”

The loss of the wild Salmon stocks due to the numerous problems created by the farmed Salmon industry affects all of us.  With the popularity of sushi on the west coast consumers should be weary of the type of Salmon that they are consuming. The sushi industry is one of the main consumers of fish and with the relatively inexpensive farmed salmon, consumers will be exposed to uncountable medications and antibiotics with their “healthy” food choice.

How can we make a change?

Ask your favourite sushi restaurant if they have wild Salmon, look for establishments that follow certifying criteria like Ocean Wise or Blue Dot.

Voting with our money is the loudest and most effective tool. Just look at your egg shelf at your local supermarket, more sustainable and ethical choices are being made available everyday as a result of consumers using their wallet to steer the industry.
